At the age of 10, Buteo Huang flew a kite for the first time. He had made it all by himself out of pages from a calendar, with a bamboo frame held together by sticky rice glue. As he watched it bounce in and out of the clouds, little did he know that he would someday become Taiwan’s greatest kitemaker.

Huang majored in architecture and started his own firm, but kitemaking was always his true passion. In 2002, when one of his kites won two awards at the International Kite Competition in Holland, he decided to shut down his business in favor of kitemaking.
Huang considers his first great kite “Pegasus,” a giant flying white horse. The moment that he saw it flying for the first time, he knew that he had made something more than just a children’s toy. Rather, it was a kind of installation art that was only complete once it was up in the sky.
Later, Huang made a kite called “Disappearing Forest.” Decorated with tree rings, it was the first time a kite had been used to convey a message of environmental conservation.

Some of Huang’s most famous kites are related to Taiwan. For example, “Tao Canoe” kite shows the traditional canoe of the Tao people, an endangered indigenous tribe on Orchid Island.
According to Huang, “Kites are an extension of my mind. By flying a kite, I can send my ideas into the sky for everybody to see.”
